Speaker/Panel: Peter Bebergal
Alongside the burgeoning New Age movement that arose out of the cynicism of the 1970s was a darker thread of magic and mystery. Heavy metal musicians, game designers, novelists, and filmmakers were finding inspiration in a devilish-tinged occultism that was making parents fret and teenagers drawing pentagrams all over their Mead notebooks. And while the resulting pop cultural artifacts were deliriously fun, a wave of paranoia washed over the public doing real damage to people's lives. Peter Bebergal, author of Season of the Witch and Strange Frequencies, offers a retrospective investigation of the occult in the 1980s, from Geraldo Rivera to D&D, from Ozzy Osbourne to British Industrial music, The Necronimicon to The Witches of Eastwick.
