Speaker/Panel: Richard McKenna, K.E Roberts, and Michael Grasso
The West's vision of the future changed radically during the Cold War period. The assumption following World War II was that atomic power–and America’s domination of it–would usher in an age of peace and profound scientific advancement. But this idea slowly turned sour as new wars, nuclear stockpiles, global political unrest, and deepening recession at home unleashed a torrent of fictional dystopias. On this panel, the editors of online Cold War-era genre/culture magazine We Are The Mutants will look at these evolving futurist visions, both utopian (Star Trek, Star Wars, NASA’s space settlement designs) and dystopian (the Alien franchise, Blade Runner, Planet of the Apes), analyze their real-world inspirations and subtexts, and discuss the revolution in science fiction that resulted.
