How D&D Changed the World

How D&D Changed the World

Thanks to the popularity of podcasts like The Adventure Zone, shows like Stranger Things, and testimonials from celebrities ranging from Stephen Colbert to Vin Diesel, everyone is coming out of the nerd closet to play Dungeons & Dragons—also known as D&D. The venerable fantasy role-playing game involving elves, dwarves, wizards, multi-sided dice, graph paper, improv theater and Doritos was created in 1974.

Writer and critic Ethan Gilsdorf, author of Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks, began playing D&D in 1979. In this talk, Gilsdorf offers a tour through D&D's humble past and resurrected present, discussing the game's effect on his own life and its outsize impact on the culture at large. He shows how the game influenced the creation of video games, interactive storytelling, and a generation of creative leaders, and how it ultimately paved the way for the mass popularity of such fantasy genre staples as The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
